Each of these songs reminds me of specific people and times from my teens through early 20’s. I think about sitting in Tom Costello’s VW outside of the high school gym, partying before one of the dances. Mike Moreland and I were friends for many many years and he and I were somewhat rabid ELP fans. I was friends with Eric the Deadhead for a while, with whom we watched some of the early MTV videos. The guys (I don’t even remember their names now) with whom we partied in their room at their parents house and cranked up Jimi Hendrix – long after Jimi was dead. There were other times partying in the back of my Datsun truck (tricked out, though we didn’t use that word then
) with 7 speaker 8-track system, covered and carpeted back area, stained glass windows, drapes etc. It’s almost like these songs were the songtrack of partying in various places and times then. None of these songs were ever played softly, but turned up as loud as we could – but without the bass thumping as sometimes today …. (and of course, don’t ever try this at home!
)
