1. Training - have done 101 workouts or runs in past 20 weeks since last big mountain – Aconcagua. A good mix of running (about 400 miles total), weight and strength training, rowing, stationary biking and carrying a pack on treadmill with 60lbs at 15% incline.
2. Gear - Have gone through packing list dozens of time, have purchased and have the right equipment (-40 boots, mittens, parka and sleeping bag). A good mix of lightweight, technical, and appropriate clothing and accessories, a 100 different things all in all.
3. Technical Skills – Ability to use all of the skills I have learned in previous climbs, roped together, crampons, glacier travel, rope tying crevasse rescue and new skills around snowshoes and ascenders.
4. Food and Energy - Eat the right things (including those that I have bought and picked out), eating more than I think that I need, seconds where I can, constant eating and energy taking in throughout the day.
5. Hydration – Drink at least one liter of water for every 1000 meters altitude. Drink even when not thirsty, take in caffeine and energy drinks throughout the day.
6. Medications – Take diamox as needed for altitude, Excedrin for altitude headaches, and standby Advil and others for just-in-case needs.
7. Sleep - Get all the sleep that is needed at night, very important.
8. Mental toughness and patience – Mentally prepared for high highs and low lows, mentally prepared for long weather delays and waits, and frustrations that occur throughout the day. Patience for the long days and long trip.
9. One step at a time – Knowing and accepting that each step is one step closer to the summit and keeping the mind on that step, not getting too far ahead or worrying about the next day or challenges ahead.
10. Enjoy Every Minute – Advice from a good friend before a previous climb, just try to enjoy and appreciate things throughout the climb and expedition, remembering all the good and bad things and really enjoying every minute!
